Stand By in Windows XP

Whenever I try to put my computer (Dell Dimension 9000 desktop) in stand by
mode manually, it prepares for standby, then goes in stand by (black sreen,
monitor contol lights go off) for a second or two, and then it turnes on
again and shows the " to begin, click your user name" screen again.
What can I do?

Thans very much!

You probably have something running in the background that's preventing
Standby. Do you have an active connection? A TV REMOTE process?

Go into Task Manager and have a look at Applications as well as
Processes, and you may be able to identify something running that is
not an essential function and/or something that you did not have
before. Try to terminate this function and see if Standby works. Note
that if you inadvertantly terminate an essential process, you will
probbaly have to reboot.

Unfortunately, my Windows skills are not sufficient to distinguish between
an essential and a non essential process. Could you provide me with some
additional information?
