sql express upsizing wizard

Ok, call me crazy, but I'm trying to upsize a database app to sql express,
but the upsizing wizard doesn't seem to see my sql express server.
Is this not an option in Access' upsizing wizard, or is something screwy
going on with just my machine?

Not sure current Access releases understand SQL 2005 yet, but I haven't
tried.

Can you see any SQL 2000 instances you may have available?

Kevin,
Yes, I can see instances of my SQL 2000 Server, but not my local 2005 express.
I know when I'm in vb.net I can see my express server fine, so I'm assuming
it's just the upsizing wizard that's not able to communicate with it, but I
was hoping someone else may have a definitive answer, or a suggestion.

Thanks

I'll bet my lunch money that I'm right :)

Access 2000 had issues when it first came out, since it beat SQL 2000 to
market. There was a service release or patch created to fix the problem.
I'll poke around to see if the same thing exists for SQL express

Well, I tried to look and see if there was a update for access 2003, but I
only found the one you were talking about in 2000. You would think they
would have made one, or at least put something in express that would allow
you to import the data easy. I can't even seem to find an import function
(again, call me stupid if it's there, but I can't seem to find it).

Express is pretty stripped down...no SSIS or import as I understand it.

I found a few successes, but it seems like there was a TON of work involved
to get it done. maybe upsize to a SQL 2000, then backup/restore to the
express?

Ok, I'll give that a try.
Also (I haven't really ever done much with SQL server before), there is
another project that I have through about moving to my main SQL 2000 Server,
but would also like to keep a local copy on my desktop for when I'm out of
the office. Does Sql Express ... replicate (I believe that is the term) with
SQL 2000 Server or should I install the older MSDE instead and just eliminate
some of my headaches for now with using express.

I've not really been exposed to SQL Express much, or any other version of
SQL 2005 for that matter.

I would eliminate variables and stay all 2000 until you have tmie to fully
test.

Any version of replication is a task not to be undertaken lightly. I'm
intimately familiar with the 2000 flavor of it...

Not sure if this will help you but maybe trying the SQL-Server Migration
Assistant for Access will give you a better result than the Wizard when
working against SQL-Server 2005 Express.

Take a look at the first answer for the thread "Upgrade to stored
procedures" on 2006-10-20 in the m.p.a.sqlupsizing newsgroup.

Which version of MS Access do you use? I have no problem to use MA Access's
"Upsize Wizard" to test-move a *.mdb jet database to SQL Server Express. I
use Access2003 and the SQL Server Express is locally on the same computer. I
do not see any reason it won't work when the SQL Server Express is on
different computer, provided the SQL Server Express is set up correctly
(allow remote access, authenticate mode...).
