Spyware question

Alec

My computer arrived home about 20 minutes ago for the shop because it would not
boot up. I was unable to get the computer to come up in Safe mode nor recovery
mode. But somehow the shop got it to come up in safe mode and cleared out some
spyware that they said was conflicting and restored (or repaired Activex). I
have a spywareblaster, but only run it ever so often. Is there some site that
can explain all this to me?

Thanks Alec

Spywareblaster isn't something you 'run'. It is a program
that disables certain functions/controls. To get an
active scanner for spyware try AdAware at
http://www.lavasoft.ge and Spybot at ???(search for it)
Javacool. Install and run both in tandem. they are both
Freeware, but donations are nice. 50 cents from every
user would keep them in business indefinitely. Be kind-
Reward.

SpyBot S&D version 1.3.5 is now out. The author's site
www.safer-networking.org has exceeded some bandwidth and has
a temp problem, but there is a mirror at Major Geeks
www.majorgeeks.com Look on the spyware tools link on the
left side of the page.

Are you sure the latest version is 1.3.5? Both the author's site and
majorgeeks shows version 1.2 as the latest. Also, latest definition
file seems to be Mar 4, 2004.

If you look deeply into the www.safer-networking.org site
for previous versions, 1.3.6 is beta. Trying to update
version 1.2 for the past few months and it reported no
updates available. Found a forum page with a link to
Version 1.3 that pointed to www.safer-networking.org . But
was unable to access the update. There was also a mirror to
Major Geeks and that worked fine.

The error I got was cgi limit exceeded try again later, so
it seems that Mr. Kolla is so successful that everybody was
trying to get to his site. It does seem odd that he hasn't
included the link to his new version, but the program I
downloaded is clearly Mr. Kolla's.

Finally found it. You were right, version 1.3.6 shows up as a RC
beta. I just ran it and it seems faster than the older version. Plus
it caught three tracking cookies the older version passed over.

Thanks.

On the Major Geek site it just shows 1.3.5 rc and didn't say
beta. It did show as beta, with a 1.3.6 beta on the Kolla
website.

Yes, it does seem faster.
