Spyware problem.

Windows Xp SP2. I have a new icon in my clock tool bar area. It looks like
the shield for the microsoft security utility but it does not have a logo
inside the shield and the language is misspelled and with poor grammar. I
know it is not a part of the security utility. When I click on it it copmes
up with a windows look alike window that shows Security center and it wants
me to download and install stuff. Finally, my question... It does not show
up in my start menu programs list. It does not show up in explorer anywhere
but it is in the "Add/Remove Programs" Utility.
When I highlight it and hit remove it does absolutely nothing? How do I get
rid of this thing. The notification balloon pops up every 10 minutes or so
and I know this can't be good. The Balloon says "Systems error found Some
systems files are corrupted. it can slowdowns and freezes operation
system"...... that is exactly the way it is written.
The window has 2 programs it wants me to install, ULTIMATE DEFENDER and
ULTIMATE CLEANER

Go through this article paying close attention to the
Smitfraud/Spyaxe/Spyfalcon/SpywareQuake section. That's what
you're dealing with.

Here's another approach to this problem you can take.

If you find this information too complicated, do yourself a
favor and pay a competent professional to clean up your system.
If their first diagnosis involves formatting and reinstalling
XP, look elsewhere. No matter what you do, make sure you have
your important files backed up to CD or DVD.

Good luck
