Anyone help? I have a flashing/alternating icon on my toolbar and a message
telling me my computer is infected with spyware and should download
antimalware products to get rid of it. Pop-ups as well but not too frequently.

Tried Windows defenderbeta 2, ad aware and spybot- nothing will remove it, I
did have a message saying a trojan virus was in my computer but once again
nothing on the remaoval tools.

Anu ideas

Probably SpywareQuake aka SmithFraud. Doesn't allow you to do a System
Restore and quickly re-infests your CPU. Everytime you Logon, will try to
re-infest, and if you use IE will re-infest. What you need to do is download
XoftSpy (free version) and have it scan your system. It will tell you what
infestation you have. The free version does not remove anything. Run your
anti-virus program, ewido, Spybot, and a-squared. Then run XoftSpy to see
what's left and manually remove what's left over. It would also help to run
in safe mode. Good luck - it's a hard one to get rid of.

Also, before you attempt to remove the beast, make sure you have downloaded
the latest definitions or updates for the spyware detectors. After you are
sure the beast is gone, turn off System Restore - this will remove all
restore points - turn System Restore back on and take a system restore point.
If the beast is SpywareQuake, and has not been fully removed, you will know
it because it will attempt to download again. So by no means, tell your
firewall to allow it.
