Spyware and Adware

Today my pc was infected with a virus I believe to be
Spyware or Adware. It says at the bottom of my task bar I
have been infected. I have an older PC running windows 98
and would like to know if theres anyting I an do to
remove this virus? I can't seem to log onto the internet
using Netzero. I get half way there and I get the old
ignore message error. My PC comes up black and says in
bold letters on the desk top I may have been infected
with Spyware or Adware. Does anyone know what I should do?

A virus is not a spyware or adware - this is something different.

Try to remove the problem using these apps:

Spybot Search&Destroy http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

HijackThis http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

CWShredder http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html

Ad-Aware SE Personal http://www.lavasoft.com/software/adaware/

McAfee Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

If you run HijackThis you can check the log it prepares - just copy and
paste it to the http://www.hijackthis.de web page and click analyze button.

Need a free antivirus? Try this one http://www.free-av.com

But it looks to me, that you have been infected with trojan called
Smithfraud (which has similiar appearance) - if so, you can try this
