Spybot

I have recently downloaded a anti-spyware program
called "Spybot, search & destroy." It finds problem
files that have spyware on them. But, I'd like to know
if it is safe to use with Windows XP? It sometimes lists
files that will change the registry upon removal of the
spyware. I must use such a program because someone
recently obtained my email password through spyware
attached on my computer. PLease help. Your advice is
appreciated. Main question: Is this program safe to use
as it may change the registry with some files?

I find no problems. it does any edits proper with fake
files for alexa etc. and have you done a scan for a trojan
on your system?????? if no antivirus try avg at
grisoft.com it's free .spybot also has a backup in case
you remove something and a program does not work you can
restore it.

This application is extremely aggressive. It's very good, may be the best
at what it does but it should really only be used by experienced users.

Try Ad Aware, www.lavasoftusa.com but even with this one, be sure to use the
backup function so you can undo a change if you have any trouble as a result
of a change it makes.

Also, set a restore point manually in System Restore as an added precaution.
Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

As should always be the case, it's a good idea to be well backed up, at
least with regard to your data files. See the third line of my signature.

.Spybot (in my opinion) is the best spyware defense out
there. I have never had any trouble with it. Hewlett
Packard also uses it. But you MUST be sure to read the
tutorial that is with it very carefully so that you know
how to utilize it properly.

.I use Spybot and I think it's the best there is. Make
sure you have the real one because there are fake ones
out there. Go to http://www.security.kolla.de/ When you
are at the real one the site page will state "The home of
Spybot S & D (search & destroy). You can download for
free or make a small donation. Be sure to read the
tutorial carefully.

I use the advanced settings and enable it to find everything that it can. I have deleted every thing that it suggests and never have run into a problem. But even if you do delete things, unless you "purge" the backups that it makes, you can undo that which you remove as there is a recovery option.

Spybot really is the way to go, and most computer users looking for a spy ware programs rely on that one and one from Lava Soft called Ad-Aware. Both need to be kept updated. Amazingly, both of these great utilities are free.

Yes. But always apply care with such things. I suggest you read a
page with very useful discussion and recommendations at

The magazine will ONLY say its better if they get advertising dollars.
It may not even be in the same magazine but in another controlled by the
publisher.
