Spybot - "Error During Check!"

N

nr

I'm running Spybot version 1.3 with the latest updates. After it
finishes the Search & Destroy this shows up in the Problem box:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error during check!: SearchMiracle (Zugriffsverletzung bei Adresse
005FD5D2 in Modul 'SPYBOTSD.EXE'. Lesen von Adresse 0446FFFF)

CoolWWWSearch.SmartSearch
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After I select 'Fix selected problems,' I get a box that says:

Some problems couldn't be fixed... and asks if Spybot can run on the
next startup. I believe I said yes to this once and it didn't do
anything.

Any ideas what the problem might be and how to solve?

What has happened is that Spybot S&D has done its job and found a piece of
spyware. It could not remove it because it was running. That's why it
offered to run BEFORE Windows loaded on the next boot - to catch it before
it booted up with Windows. You should allow it to fix the problem at boot
up. Also, the latest Spybot S&D (version 1.4) is available and you should
go ahead and download that and use it instead of 1.3. Best....JG

I don't know how necessary it is, but it is recommended that you follow
a certain procedure when preparing to update Spybot from one version to
another:

<quote>
Go into Spybot > Immunize
Click "Undo" button (at the top)
Uncheck (if checked) the following:
"Enable permanent blocking of bad addresses in Internet Explorer"
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Resident
Uncheck (if checked) the following:
Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) Active.
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced Mode > Tools > Hosts file
Click the "Remove Spybot S&D hosts list" button (at the top)
Exit Spybot-S&D
Go to Windows > Control panel > Add or Remove Programs > Locate
"Spybot –
Search & Destroy 1.3" (or whatever) > Remove.
Using Windows explorer, verified that the following folder has been
delete.
If not, delete it:
C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
</quote>

The machine is now ready to have the new version of Spybot installed.

Personally, I would throw everything but the kitchen sink at it. If you
actually do have a CWS infection, you could have other hidden parasites
as well. Ad-Aware, Spybot, and M$ Antispyware are the first to go with;
I'd then follow up with CWShredder, a2 (a-squared), your usual
anti-virus app, and finish it off by scanning with a fresh load of
TrendMicro Sysclean.

The operating system was never mentioned originally. If XP or ME, make
sure you've turned off System Restore. And regardless of OS, run all
these tools in safe mode.
