Spurious Resolution Message Whilst Playing Games

It would be great - put me out of my misery! - if someone out there has any
knowledge on this please.

I'm not sure whether this is due to a currupt/missing file or setting, or
whether it's some sort of virus (although I can't find any). Whenever I play
a game, e.g. LDA Games DX-Ball 2 or a demo I've downloaded, after about 15-20
seconds the following window pops up in the centre of the screen (size
approx. 5x3 inches):

For best picture quality, please change
resolution to 1280 x 1024

SELECT:Disable EXIT:Clear

This sits on top of the game, which you can play quite happily underneath
it. However, no matter what I do I can't get rid of the **** thing!
My screen resolution is set to 1280 x 1024.
Also, I've now noticed that it occurs whilst playing MS Pinball (but not
when it's minimised, only when full screen).
I'm running Windows XP SP2 Home Ed.

Any ideas gratefully received! Thanks!

Hello raider57

Sounds like nothing Windows does, so its probably the monitor reminding you
its native resolution is 1280x1024 and so on try pressing the buttons on the
front of the monitor to see if you can make it go away.

Hi Raider,

I think Paul has hit the solution right on the money!

In fact, the Princeton Graphics manual says the following:
2.2.2 Message location
All messages are centered on the screen.
2.2.3 Message time-out
All messages are disappearing automatically after 3 seconds, except:
?? Resolution notice message keeps until end user either disables or exits message
?? Out of range message keeps until monitor enters to PS mode

It's not because your monitor or Windows is running at the 'wrong'
resolution, it's because the game itself can't go that high. You have to
live with it, ignore it and it will go away. Or only play games that will
go to 1280x1024.

I get it all the time in older games or even newer ones that can't. Not all
game manufacturers have given us the option for the 'normal' LCD resolution,
nor do all of them apparently want to.

Yes. Many thanks! This did the trick. I feel stupid that I didn't think of
the monitor before!

Many thanks Cari. Hitting the 'exit' button on the monitor did the trick for
the DX-Ball 2 game, but I'll certainly bear in mind your input when trying to
run up my older games.
