spooler problem-new printer not responding

I have a Dell computer with pre-installed windows xp. I had an epson 400
printer attached that worked fine via an lpt port. I bought a new Lexmark
all-in-one printer that attaches via a usb port. I installed it correctly but
when I print, it goes to the spooler, uses 100% cpu, and hangs there but
never goes to the printer. The printer wont even print a test page. Lexmark
says its an issue with the spooler, which is a microsoft program so they cant
fix it. How do I correct this ? Should I return the printer and stay with my
old printer? Any help would be wonderful!
