Spontanious Background change

Whenever I reboot my system the background file sponantiously changes from
its assigned image to a specific backround image (one of the preloaded
backgrounds) instead of the one I have specifed. The loaded theme actually
changes to one called "Modified Theme" which uses this image. No matter what
theme I load it reverts to this at every restart. I have even tried deleting
this "Modified theme" theme and the associated background file, but keeps
coming back every time I start up, and I must change my theme back to the one
I prefer. What is causing this? How can I get windows to retain its desktop
theme during restarts?
