Why is most of the Clip menu grayed out?

Make sure your mouse is clicked onto the timeline proper -- that is on the
area where the time numbers are displayed. If your mouse is clicked on the
Clip or the Audio, etc, the Split icon is grayed out. Not sure if that is
what you are having the problem with, but I have had to learn where to put
my mouse pointer to get the Split icon to light up.
