Spell not available under the Tools menu in Word

I have been working on a document for a few days now, and I just noticed that
it is not catching any spelling mistakes. When I went under the Tools menu
option, the Spell Checker is not even listed! I then went under
Tools->Options, clicked the Grammar/Spelling tab, and all of the spelling
options are greyed out. What do I need to do to get spell checker back?

Note: I am using US English, running Windows XP.

Is this only with the one document, or with any older or new documents?
