Spell Check in XP

T

Teresa Hall

I recently bought a eMachines PC in which has Windows XP
Home as it's operating system. I was disappointed in that
it doesn't have spell check in Out Look Exp.
The info. I found, says that if I install Windows Word,
then I would have Spell Check, but, no where did I find
any kind of program for Windows Word.
Please advise.

Word must be separately purchased and installed. OE doesn't have a
native spell checking function, as you've found out. Do a google
search--there are some free ones out there. Also, you might want to have
a look at Mozilla Thunderbird, a free e-mail client that is superior in
some ways to OE, and includes a spellchecker.

Why are you disappointed? Outlook Express has never had
spell-checking capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the
presence of other Microsoft applications, such as the Office Suite,
Word, or the Works _Suite_ (which includes Word, not the regular
Works). There are also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware solutions
available at any of the many shareware sites on the Internet

Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:

1) Go to store/shop that sells computer software.

2) Purchase the either the stand-alone version of Word or the
Microsoft Office suite of your choice.

3) Return home.

4) Insert installation CD in PC's CD drive and follow the on-screen
prompts and instructions to install application and desired additional
features.

Word is not part of Windows but of Microsoft Office, a separate
Application suite which was not bundled in with the machine (it rarely
is these days). It would be an expensive thing to buy, even on its own,
if the only reason is to get the spell checker

Hi, MS Works 2004 at £34.00, which includes word, is hardly
expensive........

There are open source spell checkers that work with Outlook Express. Do
a google search and you'll find them.

You need MS Works *Suite* to have it include Word, which I think you
will find is about twice that. The word processor in regular 'Works' is
not Word

Yea Teresa, I went through the same thing with my eMachines. A great
computer for the price, but no spell check. Just do a Google search, there
is a freeware version or versions out there that will do the trick. If you
still cannot find one, post here in this thread again and I will send it to
you.

I think you both have confused an operating system with programs.
Windows XP is an operating system that does not come with any Office
programs. When you buy a computer from an Original Equipment
Manufacturer (such as eMachines, Dell, HP, etc.) the OEM includes some
bundle of preinstalled software. When you buy the computer, part of the
purchasing decision should be what bundle a particular OEM provides.
Otherwise, you need to purchase whatever software you require and
install it.

As for spellchecking, here are some links:

Windows XP is an operating system. The program you are referring to is
called Microsoft Word. It is not part of Windows XP and the price you paid
for your eMachines PC has nothing to do with Windows XP not including
Microsoft Word. You must purchase Microsoft Word from the shops.

Of course, if you are only looking for spell check, Malke's list of programs
that add spell check to outlook express will work just fine. Since you don't
know what Microsoft Word is, you probably don't require it so there's not
really much point in purchasing it just for spell check.

Hope this help some

If you're interested about what Microsoft Word is:
Microsoft Word is a word processor that lets you create documents like
letters, memos etc. You can add formatting (like making some text Bold,
adjusting how much space is seen between each line etc.) to the documents
and save them. It can also correct spelling and grammer errors as you type,
and offer suggestions as to how to reword sentences.

Well no, I an not confused at all. It's just that eMachines bundle does not
include Word or Office - Works, Money, Encarta, yes (never opened any of
them I don't even know what they look like).. So we (I) needed to find a
spell checker program that would work with Outlook Express, which I did,
And I see you have posted a link to one also. The decision for an eMachines
was easy. A lot more bang for the buck, using Athalon processors. 6 am to
12 PM voice free help too, 7 days a week (as long as I pay the 5 cents a
minute for the toll call). So it didn't have Word.. (BTW Gateway &
eMachines merged).

'Microsoft Works 2002' includes Works 6 word processor.

The "Microsoft Works Task Launcher" can be used to set spell checking to OE
under "Email, specify services"

Assume newer ones have same or better features.
