e-mail spell check

Recently upgraded Windows98 to WindowsXP. Windows 98
included Office. After installing XP, spell check no
longer operated. Set spell check to operate
automatically, but get the recurring message "Spell check
halted." Tried removing and reinstalling Spell check, but
that did not work. Could it be that Office in Word 98
does not "sync" with XP?

See if anything here helps:

Spell Checking does not work in OE:

Or:

And: An error occurred while the spelling was being checked or: Spell

Windows 98 does not Include Office 98. OFFICE 98 is an
application for the Mac platform.
The computer seller/mfg'r may have bundled Office 97 along
with the purchase of the computer.

If you did an upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP, your
installation of Office 97 should still be installed and
working, they are full compatible. But if you did a clean
install, then you'll need to find your OFFICE 97 CDs and
reinstall it.

Re-install Office. You'll have many other problems over the next few
weeks as upgrading opens a huge can of worms. The best way to install
XP is to backup every thing you need and then format the harddrive and
install clean.

No it didn't. No version of Windows has ever included Office.

The vendor you bought your Windows 98 computer from may have
included Office with it, but that's a very different thing.

Do you mean Word 97? Are you asking whether Office 97 works in
Windows XP? Yes, it does. If you have Office 97 installed and
you're having a spell checking problem with it, try the
instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/spellcheck.htm

I completely disagree. Unlike with previous versions of Windows,
an upgrade to XP replaces almost everything, and usually works
very well.

My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much
easier than a clean installation. You can always change your mind
and reinstall cleanly if problems develop.

Consider that the OP has already encountered a problem with doing an
update..... ?

The OP had a problem with spell checking in E-mail--probably a
very minor problem, probably not upgrade-related, and probably
one that can be fixed by suggestions he's already gotten in this
thread. The knee-jerk reaction to reinstall to fix almost any
problem is hardly ever right.

Possibly but doubtful. A guess is the upgrade failed to pick up his MS
Office installation correctly from the former OS.

I have to disagree. I feel a re-install is rarely necessary but a
clean install often is the fastest and easiest way to correct problems.
If someone keeps decent backups, a clean install is faster in many
cases than trouble shooting a problem and time can be a very important
factor.

I believe, as I said before, the OP may very well run into other
problems with the upgrade, what else failed to upgrade properly? Time
will tell.
