Speeding up unzipping?

Is there a way to speed up unzipping using Vista's own unzip? I have
7zip installed, but sometimes it's just less hassle to use Vista's
built-in unzip.. if it weren't for the painful slowness of it. I know
some people say XP was also slow: well, it wasn't and compared to
Vista it was actually blazing fast.

So.. any solutions to get Vista to speed up - or does anyone actually
know what Vista is doing (what's taking so long)?

I would suspect it's symptomatic of another process hogging your CPU, rather
than there being a problem with the unzipping per se.

If you fire up Task Manager [Ctrl-Shift-Esc] and click on 'Show processes
from all users' and examine the Processes tab, then you may be able to spot
the culprit.

My money would be on either 'SearchIndexer.exe' or 'WmiPrvse.exe'

You could probably write a whole book on ways to speed up Vista, but the
basic rule would be to disable what you don't need. eg startup processes,
services etc.

I have found that all file management in Vista is really slow.

A bit laughable that you have to disable services to get an acceptable level
of performance in something as simple as unzipping a file.

I might suggest it has something with vista's annoying habit of 'estimating'
times for everything. On my system (which is very capable), it can take
several minutes to unzip a file because its scanning the file to be unzipped
before it unzips. It seems to add a lot of unnecesary time to the extraction
process. I just want the file unzipped, I dont care how long the computer
thinks its going to take. Its going to take as long as it needs to, so why
does it spend a couple minutes trying to tell me how long its going to take
once the extraction process really begins?

I have had the same problem with Vista unzipping at an insanely slow rate.
And I have to state that nothing else was hoggin the PC, I have checked
performance when unzipping and the processor was only about 20% used.. In
fact this frequently happends however I can live with it because I love
Vista. But the problem is annoying. I do not know of a fix for this issue,
it is very minor but annoying.

Not sure what everybody means by acceptable
It's very slow and if you where using your machine at all
Moving copying saving editing from other sources like camara ph
you name it
I have a dual 3.4 with 2 gig ram ata drive it took 11:45 to unzip 2.5 mb file
Vista is flawed I am going back to XP
A file that size in xp would be finished before I took my finger of the button
