Unzipping in Vista

A

Andrew

Hi,

I am currently unzipping an 8.1Mb zip file, watching the timer count down
from 47 minutes. All other action has ceased as I wait for my assignment
notes to become available. This has put me in a whimsical mood - there is
no need for procrastination with Vista.

As I watch the minutes slowly tick by two questions have arisen in my soul
and I thought I would sign up to USEnet and submit a question. (42 minutes
remaining)

1. Why is Vista so slow at unzipping files?

and

2. Can I use a 3rd party extractor instead to speed things up?

And, while I am on the subject, why can't I ask these questions directly to
MS via their support page? It keeps complaining that the automatically
culled license key is structured incorrectly.

Thanks

Andrew

Is your AV program Norton or McAfee?
and

2. Can I use a 3rd party extractor instead to speed things up?
Yes.

You'll need to ask MS via their support page for an answer to that question.

I personally have not experienced any problems concerning performance when
unzipping files in Vista. Have you applied the Vista Performance and
Reliability Update KB938979?

Yes, there is no problem with using third party zipping utilities such as
WinRAR or 7-Zip:

Microsoft's support pages are not meant for asking questions, that is what
the Microsoft Communities were setup for which you seem to have successfully
found.

This is not Microsoft.

Thanks for the prompt response.

Yep - installed it about two weeks ago. No change.

I am currently running AVG as my anti-virus.

And, unless I understand Marketing incorrectly, offering assistance via a
website and then telling someone that their license of Windows is
"incorrectly formatted" is a bad thing. I am not totally negative against
Vista (all OS's have problems at the start) but the number of issues that I
am experiencing with it are growing and I feel frustrated that the official
help page does not offer help.

Anyways - thanks for the help. I think I might go with a 3rd party
extractor!
