slow unzip

I have read a lot about the slow Vista unzip function in this forum.
That is also the case with my Vista-machine : several minutes (hours) to
unzip a zip-file.

I have noticed that this is only the case if the zip-file contains folders
and sub-folders.
A zip-file with only files (no folders/sub-folders) in it unzips lightning
fast in pretty much the same way it was done in XP.

That makes me think that the folders/subfolders in a zip-file are the
problem in Vista.
I hope that this may help to find a solution to the nasty problem ?

The solution is not to use Vista at all... all file copying is sluggish...

You delete a shortcut and it needs to "calculate" the time remaining to
delete it.. lol
For crying out loud...

If you insist on using that horrible OS, then you should use some of the
free applications that
exist for unzipping not only zip but other formats like rar.

I would suggest 7zip but vista broke compatibility! ARRGGGG!!!
(yes this is the correct way of viewing this problem, vista changed thus IT
broke compatibility not
as some twisted minds somehow see it the other way around)

That was not at all the answer I was waiting for Tiberius.
You are wasting everybodies time and bandwidth with this kind of stupid
answers.

I did read the whole post about that horrible OS and twisted minds.

- I am staying with Vista whether you like it or not.
- I am trying to find a solution to make "ZipFolders" faster, because I want
to stay with it. Whether you like it or not.

My initial post was meant for MS-people and other forum members who want to
think in a constructive way.
I was not inviting MS-slammers like you.

I gave you an option in a constructive way. I also criticize vista because
its a pile of crap.

I love MS products as long as they are good. I use them all the time. But to
blindly follow whatever
is shoved down my thought? No SIR!

If you are unable to fix the zip folders themselves to work fast, use a 3rd
party utility like I said...

Most people use WinRar now that is not free..

I took the time to find you the links for a freeware...that is very good if
you see the reviews.

Not only did you not say thank you, you showed some stupid attitude...
just because you cannot handle a person telling you the truth about an OS
you blindly love.

I was not asking for an alternative solution.
So thanks but no thanks.

bye-bye Tiberius.

Maybe I have found the culprit ?

I stopped OneCare to permanently check for virusses and spyware and
unzipping of all the zip-files on my system are lightning fast since then.

Maybe a hint for the OneCare people ?

Thanks for the follow-up post with your solution. I was initially excited
about OneCare but decided to go back to one of the tried and true solutions
everyone knows and hates (Sy***tec). ;)

Hi,
I am glad that my findings were usefull to you.
But : be careful please !
I do not know if it is actually OneCare that is at stake, it might as well
be Vista.
What I am trying to say is that I am not sure that this problem will not
occur with Sy***tec :))

MS-Adict:
Glad to see that you found the solution. I haven't experienced your
problem but have heard of many issues with OneCare. An alternative for
OneCare is Avast (free), I've heard good reviews. I use Nod32 from eset.com
which is reasonably priced and has very little overhead. For Spyware
Defender works well as does SpyBot (free) and A-Squared (free). I'm not
having problems with Vista other than an occasional 64-bit driver issue.
Have a great day.

You just like causing trouble. Now go play with Ubuntu and leave the Vista
people alone.

A constructive answer wouldn't be to abandon the software. A proper answer
would be how to fix the zip issue, but I guess you can't figure that out.

People know they have options with other software just like you have the
option to STOP annoying everyone in the newsgroup.

Some more info :
- I have uninstalled OneCare (as far as that is possible : even after
running the OneCareCleanUp.exe from MS, there are tons of remaining OC
entries in the registry).
- I have installed AVAST home edition.
The result is absolutely the same !

I continue to look for the real culprit.

I am very happy for you Cal Bear.
But it looks like a lot of people have severe unzip-speed-problems.
It also looks like the AV-software is not the culprit - I guess it is Vista
itself.
I for myself have the same problems with OC & Avast.

The only benefits of Avast over OC are :
- It's less expensive (Avast=free, OC=very expensive).
- One can download Avast in English (I cannot activate OC in English because
I am living in France - reason why I gave up on OC).

Right click on the zip file, click Properties, click "Unblock" in the
General tab.

Hope this helps

I am afraid that it does not help.
There is something else going on - especially with zip-files containing
folders and sub folders.
