My computer at work is a 850 mhz pent 3 with 256mb of ram running windows
2000 professional and office 2000. My laptop at home is a Celeron 2.4 ghz
with 512mb ram running xp pro and office xp. The computer at work opens up
Microsoft Word in 2 seconds it is ready to start typing. My laptop takes
6-8 seconds to start typing in word. Why the difference? Neither computer
has the office OSA thing loading at startup. I have noticed that at home
when word opens it says requesting virus scan. How do I turn that off?

The hard drive in the laptop is probably slower than the office machine -
that's part of it. The virus scan will also add some time. In your
antivirus program , look for a setting like "Enable Offcie Plugin" and
uncheck it.
