cursor position jumps location

I have XP w/ SP3 installed (and all other MS updates as far as I know). I
recently updated my Office 2000 suite at the MS link. HD 6 GM (Compaq
Presario Lap top; Pent 2 w/ 700 MB RAM)

Problem: When composing Word documents and in Yahoo email composing mode,
the cursor position location jumps. I will be in the middle of typing a
sentence when the cursor will jump to a seemingly random position within text
above. New text displaces the old - it does not overwrite it. Only happens
occasionally.

This also happens when filling in user names / passwords. Usually it occurs
when I am filling in PW line, with the cursor jumping up into the username
line.

Any ideas? While my RAM is suspect, I would have thought that would just
cause a delay and would not account for the re-positioning of the cursor…

TIA, quest

As you type, vibration of the sensitive membrane in the touchpad causes
the pointer, or cursor, to jump to a new location. Disable the
touchpad, possibly in the BIOS and this shouldn't happen.
