Speech recognition software

Years ago there was a freeware/shareware version of speech recognition
software for a wintel plaatform. Does anyone know what the name of it is and
if it is still available?

Microsoft's research division had an SDK that included MS dictation. It was
a self-contained speech-to-text converter. I recently went looking for it
again though and it has disappeared. No amount of Googling could turn it up.

A recent article in 'New Scientist' stated that IBM were releasing the
code for ViaVoice as open source.

I've not been able to confirm this, but IMHO ViaVoice is second only
to the excellent Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Even looking at it from even afar, you know it's going to make a furious
hornets nest in the HKCR of the registry. Let's leave its install project
for someone who draws the short straw...

Does that thing really work? I tried the first several issues of DNS and it
was a pain in the butt.

For that matter, does ANY of this stuff work without a learning curve a
year long?

Well it takes a baby a couple of years to learn, so it should be a piece
of cake for a grown-up like you. :)

Pretty sure that download is a version of MS's Agent (that goofy
talking cartoon character.)

or warez please.

Because Andy Mabbett is stalking me in this group, I have him killfiled.

I'm not sure. But if you're right, then it's something I'd consider fit
for installing on one's mother-in-law's machine...

You seem very confident that she doesn't read this newsgroup. :)

OT. Dragon Naturally Speaking v5 (Prefered edition) was IMHO the first
genuinly practical version. I'm currently using Dragon Naturally
Speaking v7 (Standard edition) and it's practical for dictating text.
Try and control the computer AND dictate text, and it is not
practical.

I think the main trick is getting the hardware right. It does'nt
matter how much money you spend if the bits don't match. I gave up
trying to match mics and soundcards, and now use a USB mic (A/D
conversion is built in)

<quickly unbuttoning blouse>

Maybe it would work best on a dedicated, "second" machine, huh? The port
the files over the network kind of thing?
