speaker icon on task bar not working 'right'

the 'speaker' icon in the task bar down by the clock, when i click on it to
get the pop-up box to adjust the volume with the slide-bar, its not coming
up. instead, it throws 'volume control' at the bottom of the screen between
the start button and the clock. when i click and/or double click on it,
nothing comes up there either. if i right click on it the only options it
gives me are move, minimize or close. the only way i can adjust the volume
is to right click on the speaker icon down by the clock, then click on
'adjust volume properties'. that pulls up the 'sounds and audio devices
properties' then i have to adjust the sound or mute it from there.

the convenience of that single little pop up box with the slide bar to
adjust the volume was so nice and it was working up until today. i dont know
what happened except for last night, i went to mute the sound and the slide
bar box froze on the screen with no way to get rid of it except to reboot the
pc. after that, it hasnt worked right since. i thought that maybe a system
restore would maybe fix it so i restored back a few days, didn't work, so i
went back a few more days. i've seen the slide bar box come up one time out
of about 20 tries, now, its making me go through all the extra steps.

is there a quick fix for this? i've made no changes to anything, added no
other programs, nothing and i've run every virus detector i have. i think
its more human error or at least i hope so..........

Start, Settings, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, uncheck "Place volume icon in the
taskbar", Apply, OK Then go back and check the box again.
If that fails, uncheck it again, reboot, then check it again.

If all that fails, you may have to reinstall the drivers for the soundcard.

If the soundcard is part of the motherboard, the drivers would be on the CD that came with the
MB. If it's a plug-in card, they're on the CD that came with the card.

Try the PC manufacturer's website, or Google for it.

If you get no results, download the free trial program called "ChipInfo.exe" and
click the appropiate tab to get the board's exact manufacturer and device info.

Great! As long as it's working, it doesn't matter how. :)
( Maybe that's why some refer to it as Windoze....)
