I am not sure what caused the problem, but here's what i
did,
first i think there was a NTFS fault on my computer.
Windows stopped because of the error.
Then when i rebooted it gave me the same error(a few
times) then i loaded in to safe mode, admin and removed
something from the config that i don't think i needed.
Then the computer crashed on a config error.
wouldn't recover, would not set back, nothing worked, and
since i didn't know what started the file i stopped, i
tried to reinstall xp.
dind't want to kill all files on computer so loaded
windows to another dir.
Got windows up and running, everything works (for most
part) but there are a few files that give me access
denied. The most important location is in:
Documents and settings\(my user id for orig install\my
documents

I need to get into my documents to recover my music files
(don't have the CDs anymore, but did have them on
computer)
How can (if i can) recover these files?

(I tryed safe mode, command prompt, different computer,
install XP to different drive and access files, convert
HD to fat32, error check,
What else can i try?
thanks

The one part of your post that confuses me is that you said you convereted
the drive to fat32. I assume, if you did so, you used a program like
partition magic. Now the thing is, in fat32, there is no security, so
anyone and everyone on the computer has full control over all files/folders
on the fat32 drive. Now if the drive you are accessing is still NTFS, then
you'll need to take ownership of the files.

To take ownership of a file or folder:

.
Thanks for your reply, but after checking out the web
page, and trying both ways the board offers i still do
not have access.

I can't get to it in admin or anything.
(Windows told me that when i install again i would lose
access to some windows documents and apps. that is why i
installed to different dir.
My start up asks which operating systemm i want to load
(New xp install or orignal.) the old one crashes,
The new one does not give access to old "my documents"

do you have any more suggestions?
Thanks

I tried to use partition magic to convert the drive, but
it would not due to error (compressed or sparced files)

Thanks for replying,
I tryed to take ownership like the file said, but in my
advanced box i do not have take ownership.
All i have is 3 options
archive
indexing
or compress.

Any other ideas?

Is the drive FAT32 or NTFS?
