spammer using my email address

I just got a spam email from my own email address. Can someone explain how
that could have happened and what I should do about it? Is a spammer using my
email address to send out spam to everyone?

There is nothing you can do. Spammers can spoof any email address as the return. They often use the same return address as the they did for the TO address so that it will get through your ISP's spam filter. They may or may not be using your address for other spam. The only way you would know is if you start getting a lot of messages from other ISP's stating that they could not deliver mail you did not send.
