Spam vs Junk Mail folder

We have 2 clients running in our network....Outlook 2003 and 2007.

We are running Exchange 2003 SP2 with Intelligent Message Filtering and
IMFTune.

On the 2K3 clients there's a SPAM MAIL folder and JUNK MAIL folder. Both
recieve emails.

On 2K7, the folders are SPAM and JUNK MAIL.

Can someone tell me the difference between these 2. Is one created by IMF
and the other part of the client? If so, at what point during the processing
of the mail would it go to the Outlook butil in folder? If it bypasses the
IMF folder, it then gets checked by the client, and if it's deemed a spam it
gets out into the Outlook built in folder.

I'm assuming that the SPAM and SPAM MAIL are the Outlook native folders,
since they have differing names while the JUNK MIAL folder name is common to
both, so would appear to be created by a common external source from the
cleint itself, like INF in Exchange.

Thanks in advance

This is correct. Outlook uses "Junk E-mail" and whatever other product you're
using created the "SPAM" folder. To Outlook, that latter folder is just an
ordinary mail folder with no particular special attributes. Outlook never
uses it.

Both Outlook and Exchange use Junk E-mail as the folder. The other folder
either has been created manually or by a 3rd party solution that you either
have installed on the server or the client.

Thanks for the responses guys.

What we use for filtering here is IMF in conjunction with IMF tune to be
able to maniulate the IMF a little better, nothing else.

Users do get items in their SPAM folder, which you say was created by
another 3rd party app. I don't believe IMF Tune created it. What would filter
mail into that SPAM folder? I've deleted it in my Outlook 2K7 client to see
if it reappears. I don't think it will, but I'm still curious what would
currently trigger mail to be filtered there?

They may have implemented something prior to my employment that created it,
but right now all mail is managed by IMF/IMF Tune.

Thanks

A 3rd party client or server side virus scanner for instance could cause
this. Surely you are not just running a Junk E-mail filter? ;-)
They could also have created it manually and use rules to filter things to
that folder.

Yeah, of course, the virus scanner.

Thanks Roady. Too many things going on right now, I just had mail filter on
the brain.

Thanks again
