Spam Rules Not Working

Kevin Purcell

I have set up a spam rule to filter messages with a word in the subject to
delete those messages. I also have another with the same word in the from
address to delete. But messages with the word keep getting through and are
NEVER deleted. What else do I have to do to get the rules to work?

'keep getting through' as in they appear in your inbox or in the Junk Mail
folder?

What version of Outlook, what type of email account?

If you do a Run Rules Now, does it fire against the message, or does it just
stay in the inbox?

Ok, that implies that the rule isn't set up correctly to recognize that message.
What's the text of the rule?

I have a similar issue...the rule work if I hit "run rules now" but they
never run themselves. I have Outlook 2003 and a pop account. I think it may
be related to not completely downloading the spam emails--only the headers???
I am not sure...any help appreciated.
thanks, Keivn.

What folder are the messages in that you want the rules to affect?

I have set up a spam rule to filter messages with a word in the
Outlook 2003 and IMAP email account used to read AOL emails.

Rules and IMAP always seemed to be tricky to me. In order for them to work,
the messages need to be fully downloaded, not just the header. That's how
I understand it, anyways. But, again, the messages are coming in, are they
going to your Inbox folder, or a different folder?

Mine go to the Inbox.

And are you downloading the whole messages, or just the headers?

Also, it's really confusing to the thread when quoted material just ups and
disappears. Not everyone has a view where they see the entire message, many
of us only show unread messages, so, we don't see everything else. If you're
not able to tell whatever client you're using to access the newsgroups to
quote the entire message, then you may want to look at a different client.

I am trying to track down a similar "rules not running" automatically problem myself. I am talking about rules I that I have created, not the spam rules. Similarly this is on BOTH of my IMAP accounts, although one of them more reliably runs rules automatically. The rules run fine on both accounts when run manually.

So, I thought I would take your advice and make sure I am downloading the entire message, not just the header. Even after ensuring that I am indeed downloading the entire message, the glitch still occurs.

So, here's a new idea: I noticed that since I can check my IMAP folders from multiple computers (the filters are running on one that is turned on 24/7), and a web browser, and my phone, this might be my problem. See, once I check my e-mail from one of these alternative locations, the email is marked as "read." It seems that outlook does not run rules on already read messages in my INBOX. If I turn one that is sitting in my INBOX from read to unread, it is immediately filtered. Spooky, huh?

So my questions:

1) BigK, could this be the source of your problems?
2) Anyone know how to have Outlook run rules periodically on the entire INBOX, including "read" messages?
