I'm looking at getting a spam filter, but with the thousands that are out
there, I'm not sure which one would be the best. Here's the criteria that
I'm looking for:

1. Compatible with Outlook and Outlook Express
2. Capable of using DNS Blacklists
3. Friends/Enemies or Whilelist/Blacklist options
4. Can bounce messages back as undeliverable
5. High accuracy for catching spam and low false-positive

We use MailWasher Pro and couldn't be happier.

Whatever filter you use, DO NOT bounce messages.

Virtually all spam fakes the FROM fields. Bouncing merely floods an innocent
bystander - then YOU get reported for spamming.

Bouncing messages is also fruitless, as the from address is normally forged
or fake anyway.

| Yeah! Do not bouce the messages back! This is also telling the spammers
| that they hit a valid email.
|
| SpamPal is a "free" filter. The way you configure it would indicated the
| accuracy of the number of true spam emails. Has White/Black list options.
| Had known public Blacklists. Can be configured to block by countries.

You might want to look at getting a Gmail account. They seem to have
a pretty effective spam protection built in.

I have been using a gmail address with my public newsgroup postings
since the end of August and the spam arriving at that email address
has never averaged more than 6 per day and most recently it has just
over 3 per day (93 total in the past 30 days).

There are other reported drawbacks to using Gmail accounts but their
spam protection seems pretty good.

Good luck

Well, seeing as I want something that will work with my existing e-mail
accounts, that's not an options.

Thanks anyway...

One that I tested was able to check that the e-mails originated from the
actual address that was or wasn't forged in the from. If it was valid, it
could bounce it back, if not, it just moved it to a spam folder.

Mailwasher doesn't seem like a good option seeing as it doesn't allow for
individuals to see their spam (or at least didn't appear to at first
glance). There are two people that use this computer and I'd want both
accounts to be able to have their own 'spam' folder and capability of adding
to white/blacklist.
