Spam and wizard rules

T

Tirek Zelvuso

Hello All,

Is the ability of Outlook to apply rules on incoming mails enough to hold
back the spam-mails?

Who tried this allready with success? And how? Is adding all the dirty and
frequently used words in spam a solution?
I tried it allready with a little test but it seemed to me everything did
get trough ignoring some of the words I added to the list. Also did an older
rule (that should apply to undisclosed-recipients) stop working as if it was
(yes) "overruled".

I ask this question since I'm not to confident in those freeware spam-tools,
especially those that install spyware.

Bye,

Tirek.

No, Wizard Rules aren't enough anymore these days as they continiously
change the address you can't block on sender. As they "screw up" the words
by mistyping them or placing false HTML tags in the source of the message
you can't block on specific words anymore as well. And I can give you lots
of examples where rules or combination of rules wouldn't stop them either.

MailWasher is a very popular and effective tool. Also Outlook 2003 has a
built-in Junk E-mail Filter and adds the Block Internet Pictures features
which helps you in preventing showing that you are "alive" (e-mail
verification) just by collecting the spam picture when clicking on a spam
message.

I have posted this here 2x before and it "mysteriously dissapeared" somehow.
Yes, there actually is a way but it is not easy and you may need to tweak it
to your likings.

btw - Mailwasher is a fantastic app! I also have been using it for years. It
is not 100% thorough as spammers have thier tricks ya know :)

Here is the original post where I got the idea for my rule. It is in broken
english but understandable nonetheless. Basically it works like a whitelist,
sending all incoming email to your deleted bin except email specifically
from your contact list. All other email stays in your deleted bin, unopened
and is deleted when you close outlook.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Set a rule that moves all items that have your email address to your deleted
items folder then add to that rule that only people from your contact list
will be allowed to enter your inbox and this will stop you from having to
see anything from any spammers - Occassionally check your deleted items
folder for email that you may want and add only those you want to your
contact list and also set your Deleted Items folder to DELETE items on
Outlook EXIT.... Once this is done for about a month you should have all
contacts added to your contact list that you turly wanted and add any from
forums like this one etc.

Once everything is set and all rules applied you will only have to see the
emails you truly want - this will also elimate the possibility of ever
opening a virus unless one of your contact individuals send it on to you....
-------------------------------------------------------

also, turn off any preview panes so email does not open automatically.
Again, you will need to tweak this to work to your satisfaction.
sweet, huh?

This only works when you have a static list of friends and only receive mail
from them after you've added them to your contacts. I figure a lot of people
receive valid mail from people they don't have in their contacts list.
Example; I mail my insurance company with to their general account and I
receive a reply from a personlised address. In this case I'll have to dig
around my Deleted Items folder and make sure I don't actually delete it.
Instead of going through my spam in the Inbox before I delete it I would be
going through my spam in the Deleted Items folder before I delete it; same
process different folder.
