Space Used by XP

I installed XP profesional on my laptop. My laptop has a
10 gig hard drive, after installation I only had 3.5 gigs
of space left. Whats up with that???

the XP files are 1.5 gb
If you have a large page file and a hybernation file then its more...
A typical cunsumption then is 3 GB,
but it cannot be 6.5 gigabytes! Perhaps you UPGRADED and did not do a clean
install?
Then that means that your programs are taking up the rest of the space and
the older files of win98 are still on the
hard disk in case you want to uninstall xp and revert back to win98.

Do a hard disk clean up : START> ALL PROGRAMS> ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>
DISK CLEAN UP.

see if that helps.

XP used about 1.7 GB, if you upgraded, your old OS (W98, ME)
is still on the drive as a fall-back unless you uninstall
those files. XP has a number of protected system files that
it creates, system restore and virtual memory.

You can reduce the amount of space used by these files and
you can remove the old OS files.

You can also upgrade your hard drive.

Hi

10 Gig is not good enough to run XP, you should have al least 15 Gig on C drive to make XP to run smoothly
Hdd is now quite cheap. I would suggest you to change to a larger Hdd, e.g. 40 Gig is quite good and cheap

BTW, XP Pro would not occupy 6.5 Gig by itself.
My XP Pro with Sp1 and Office XP with Front Page only occupied 3.4 Gig on my Hdd

a 10 gig HD is small, but still usable for XP

XP takes about 2 gigs...so you must have had something on the drive
previously...if you don;t need it...just delete it

otherwise backup your data, and reinstall

just take the option to format the drive

Laptop HDDs are still pricey compared to their desktop equivalents -
and harder to put in.

i have xp running on a 9gb drive, i say running...more like crawling along, but it does work, anyway have a look in your c drive and see if there is a my documents folder in the root of the drive, its a classic indicator of an upgrade, or duel boot install. if thats the case make sure you backup before you format.
