sp4iis.exe crash during sp4 installation

Ken Schumm

Each time I try to install SP4 from the CD it churns away
for awhile, then aborts with an error that says

"sp4iis.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
windows. An error log is being created".

At that point the installation uninstalls everything and
I am back where I was. No apps are running and virus
checking is disabled prior to start of sp4 installation.

The installation program successfully backs up files,
backs up registry, installs files, and seems to be either
in or just finishing the process of updating registry
keys when the crash occurs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try uninstalling IIS.
IIS is installed/removed via Add/Remove Programs, click "Add/Remove Windows Components".
I had the same slow-down, actually froze but was in fact running 1/10000 normal speed.
When I installed SP4 in Safe Mode, at mid-install IIS gives an error that it can't connect to "metabase", whatever that is.
Just restore SP3, uninstall IIS, in Safe Mode install SP4, then reinstall IIS if you actually need it.
