sp4 setup error

B

Bob Schmalzigan

When updating from sp2 to sp4 I get "Service Pack 4 Setup
Error" "The file c:\Windows\servicepackfiles\i386
\msdatsrc.tlb is open or in use by another application. No
applications appear to be running in task manager window.
Any clue?

Thanks
Bob

Hi,

Try to install it in safe mode.
If you want to know which application is ussing this file you can use some
tools as process explorer or handle.exe.
This tools are free and can be download on the following links:

.
Tried in safe mode with same result. Ran process.exe and
handle both of which did not indicate the file being used
by anything.

How do you install the SP4 ?
Do you use a CD ? Do you use a script ?
Is it part of an unattend or sysprep installation ?
If yes, could you try to simply install it only from the CD or from a share,
without any script, only by clicking on the exe ?

I have tried to install from the CD as well as download
from windows update site. By the way, this pc is on sp2
and I received the same results trying to go from sp2 to
sp3 instead of sp4. I have had little success trying to
determine what the file msdatsrc.tlb is. Is it a table or
dll file?

Hi,

Here is what you can try:
- to launch the command "sfc /scannow" to check the integrity of the
protected files
- to repair windows by booting with the installation CD.

I do not know what is the role of msdatsrc.tlb.
