SP4 killed my Hard Drive?

I have Win2K SP1 on a laptop. It took 2.5 days to run the install of SP4. I
did choose to back up my current config in the install options, but I still
did not expect it to take this long.

I also noticed that after awhile during the install, my hard drive was
running VERY loud. It continued to run very loud after the install. When I
reboot it comes up quiet and remains quiet. But, if I try to do anything
intensive, like a virus scan, the drive becomes painfully loud and remains
loud even after the program finishes executing. It doesn't quiet down until I
do a reboot. It also seems like the virus scan tool was running extremely
fast.

Is something wrong here? Is my hard drive dying?

Probably yes. Download a diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's
website to find out.

Hi,
Is something wrong here? Is my hard drive dying?

I would backup right away. Then I would check your Event Viewer in
Admin Tools. If you are having drive problems it should let you know
in Red under System or Applications.

Drive noise is usually a problem when a drive is failing. It is not
caused by the OS that I have ever found. Usually when a drive is noisy
it is about to fail.

Cheers,

Lara
