SP4 for XP

In recent weeks, I read someone saying on here that someone packaged all
the updates for XP, since SP3. So, it's not really SP4, but before
April 8, I'd like to download that when I get to a WIFI spot. But I
dont recall what thread this was in. Rather than have to read hundreds
of messagess again, can someone please repost the URL for this.

If some third party packed a so-called post SP3 Roll-Up, I have simple
advice...

The tool comes from them, but while the downloading activity
is happening, the files come from Microsoft.

That tool consults the manifest file on Windows Update, to figure
out what files should be downloaded for a rainy day.

So it is safe?????
Im downloding it right now. Its only 2 meg for the latest version. I
thought it would be huge. or is this one of those installer packages
where it goes online to do the actual install? Part is written in some
other language. Looks like German?????
Of course Im DLing it from W98, so I cant run any online installer,
which I dont do anyhow......

Once I get it and copy it to my XP machine, what do I do with it?

BTW: Using the PCTEL modem, I managed to activate XP. It's easy. I
was prepared to have to answer all kinds of technical questions. It ran
for a couple minutes and said it's done..... SIMPLE!

I'm pretty sure that is the case. You can't get all the updates in 2 MB!
I'd guess it's more like several hundred megabytes! So I don't think
you'll get very far with this.

The first time I ran it, I got somewhere around 2GB of files. I
tried to turn on as many options as possible.

On my second attempt, I got perhaps 800MB. I haven't spent the time
to see what downloads disappeared, between the two sessions.

Since I have SP2 and SP3 redistributable, I don't need stuff like that.

You can download the tool itself over dialup, but when it comes to running
it, you'd need the Wifi setup or something that can handle 800+ MB. Whatever
the number is today, who can say, unless they just ran it. I'll be running
it again one of these days (as I have a computer some distance from here,
that is way behind on updates, and that computer is on dialup).

one of the tricks is to exclude service packs you
already have on your install disk.

But, it is still HUGE

Ok, I kind of figured out that it saves all those individual files to
the drive, or a storage medium. Then I can run it offline anytime.
CORRECT? This is definately NOT for dialup!

The creating part is not for dial up.

But the installing part is ideal!

well, I got four languages, English, Italian, German and French, for all
windows versions and all office versions

the final folder is about 35 Gb

Hi Davidm,

It creates a directory of your choice on the download
machine. The directory will also contain a utility
to start the installation process.

You copy the directory to a stick. Put the stick in
whatever machine you want and run the utility
on the stick. Or copy the stick to the target
hard drive. Use and reuse.

By the way, you can download several Windows OS updates and put
them in different directories on your stick. The downloading
machine does not have to be the same Windows OS as the
target.

There is supposed to be some file on the Microsoft server, that wsusoffline
uses to fetch all the relevant updates for a particular OS.

One part of the program fetches the updates, and puts them into
some storage area. You run this on an Internet connected machine,
this month, to save the files for some future date.

The other part of the program, you run it
on a client machine later, to install the updates. This
could be a machine with dialup, where a WinXP re-installation
would take forever to download and update the OS to the latest
set of patches.

The thing that bothers me right now, is the virustotal report
for the package. On the one hand, the authors of the program
know that it triggers virustotal reports. They even keep a PDF
of the current report on their site, as acknowledgment of that.
The question I have, is what part of the program is doing that,
and can I trust it.

It's written in AutoIt script language.

Most AV's will trigger because of the packer AutoIt uses.
ie: the upx packer.

This is a known problem for past versions of upx.

They just need to update upx and recompile.

In short, nothing to worry about. It's a well known program.

Is that what wsus generates? My wsusoffline folder is 2.66 GB, 2.65 of
which is in "client", of which 59.3 MB is in cpp, 771 MB in dotnet, 111
in msse, 132m in o2k3, 811 MB in ofc, 22.1 in wddefs, 138 in wdefs, 88,7
in wsus, and 578 in wxp (with small amounts elsewhere).

Is yours so much bigger because I've only gone for (I think) XP itself
and Office 2003, whereas you've gone for everything wsus can get, or are
we talking about something else entirely?

Why go to that trouble when you can use a disk image backup program like Macrium Reflect and they have a free version as well ?

The XP SP4 Project keeps Windows XP secure: it's open source, and it
uses Google Chrome for you to surf the web, since Chrome has very solid
code and is being updated, this keeps you safe while browsing online.
And we use system level sandbox technology(Sandboxie) for you to open
and handle files, since it works at system driver level, this keeps you
safe while accessing file. Also, we include a patch to disable Windows
Autorun feature, which makes you safe to handle USB storage devices.

Decidedly uneasy.

Whether Chrome is a good choice is another matter, ditto Sandboxie (I
presume that's a sandbox for IE?) and the blocking of autorun; but these
sound like the developers have their own agenda(s), and I definitely
wouldn't call it SP4, which at least _implies_ continuity with previous
ones.
