AFter installing SP3, there are certain programs which I cannot load. Has
anyone else had this problem?

Thank you in advance,

The programs are probably incompatible with SP3. I had this happen with
Norton Save and Restore. I had to contact Symantec and they gave me a free
download of a SP3 compatible version of the program. I would contact the
makers of your software.

Nope, sure haven't. But, then again, you didn't say which programs.

*What* programs? What happens when you try to load them? If you get an
error message, please quote it verbatim.

Thank you for your reply.

I am trying to install Quicken 2002 Deluxe, 3D Labs Wildcat VP card drivers,
A bell ringing program called "Abell", Chessmaster 8000.

I tried to load these programs at work and they loaded okay. At work I have
Windows XP Professional with SP3.

I tried to load these programs on another machine here at home, and they had
Windows XP Professional with SP2.

On the machines above, all I had to do was to put the CD into the CD drive
and it would automatically begin to install. Here I had to click on install.
I would see the hour glass pointer for about 30 sec. and the nothing else
happens. Then when I shutdown the machine, I would see the install box
briefly before Windows did an end program routine.

Hope this gives you some insight.

Thank you

Have you considered that maybe the CD drive itself is going south? Put a
known well working drive in the computer and see if the software will install
with the good drive.

Nick

Yep. I tried another program Nikon's Picture Project and it loaded fine from
the CD drive.

Interesting; in your first post you said the software wouldn't install after
installing SP3. Then in a later post you said the software installed at work
under SP3, but at home it wouldn't install under SP2. So, first it wouldn't
install under SP3 even though you said it did, then later it wouldn't install
under SP2? So which way is it? Also, you didn't use a known good CD drive in
the machine in which the software wouldn't install, so we still don't know if
the problem is in the CD drive or the disks themselves, or with SP2, or SP3.
Not much to go on.

Yes, Mark I can see your confusion.

These programs will not load after I have installed SP3 on my machine at
home - quicken 2002 deluxe, 3D Labs Wildcat video card drivers, and Abel.

I called Microsoft's help center and their conclusion was that the disks
were bad, however, I was to install them at work which is also running
Windows XP Professional with SP3, --- so it is not the disks. The disks are
good. Wouldn't you say?

I was also able to install the programs on my neighbors computer. He is
running Windows XP Professional with SP2, ---- so once again the disks are
good.

Now lets tackle the the issue of the cd drives. I have been able to install
a couple of other programs from that drive onto my machine. I believe that
the cd drive is functioning --- wouldn't you agree?

I have two cd drives installed in my machine. I thought that I would try the
programs that I could not load from the one cd drive in this second drive,
but they would not load.

My conclusion: There is something wrong with the way SP3 loads on my
machine. It changes a switch or something that prevents it from allowing
certain programs to load.

If I cannot get an answer from someone, I am going to reinstall windows,
load SP1, then load all of my programs before loading SP3. That is the plan
anyway.

Thank you for your help.

Have you tried cleaning the cd`s ?

Thanks for the clarification. Strange indeed. It does seem highly unlikely
that both disk drives in the same computer cannot read those disks but can
others, and that the disks or the drives are to blame.

Can you uninstall SP3? Maybe if you go back to SP2 they will install.
Doesn't seem likely at this point though, but worth a try. You might also try
copying the entire contents of the disks to your hard drive and running the
install from there, rather than from the disks.

Hello Mark,

I have tried uninstalling SP3, but that does not fix the problem. I have to
reinstall windows. I have also tried copying the entire disk to my hard
drive, that did not work as well, the install program still just hung. I have
also tried running windows in a strip down version, I forget what it is
called at the moment, but it is something like safe mode, and no luck there.
I have been working on this problem for about 3 weeks now with no success.
Any thing else that you might have run across, or a similar problem in the
posts?

Thanks Nick

Do you mean "diagnostic startup"? Click Start, run, type msconfig, ok. When
the utility opens, tick the diagnostic startup button, apply, then exit and
reboot. See if it installs then. You may have something running that is
conflicting with those installers. Try safe mode as well. I am posting from a
laptop that would completely freeze and had to be powered off by holding the
power button, whenever I tried to install CCleaner. In safe mode it installed
just fine. Never found out what the conflict is, but CCleaner works perfectly.

Hello Mark,

Yes, it was the diagnostic startup, and I tried that yesterday with the
folks at Microsoft Help and Support Center via India, and nothing would load
- or that is how I remembered it and I did not think it would work this time
either. But it is always best to give free advice the benefit of doubt and to
just go over previous methods. One never knows what will happen.

Well, I started the computer back up in the diagnostic mode and tried to
load those programs and this time they could not wait to get loaded. They all
loaded perfectly and they also run perfectly. Who would have thunk it, and I
was about to throw away all the installations I have done over the last
several days and start fresh hoping something would not go wrong.

Thank you for your help and convincing me to give things just one more try.

I don't know what the problem is and probably never will, but this work
around is just great.

Thanks again.

Hey! Glad to see that you got your software installed. Probably one of the
other applications that you have running was conflicting with the
installation. You could go into selective startup, uncheck all the boxes then
one at a time, do an uninstall and a reinstall for each one until you find
which application causes the hang. But that is a lot of trouble, and I
wouldn't blame you if you don't!
