Cannot load SP3 on my SP2 XP

Cannot load SP3 on my SP2 XP:

I tried this run SP3 last night on my computer and it told me "not
allowed" (going from memory). After this, my system has to remove all
the files and then it says "couldn't uninstall correctly, XP might not
work properly".
The system is running fine, but I wonder why but I wonder why I cannot
install it?!?!

Before this, I had a problem with IE not working and I thought it
might be fixed with SP3 (it wasn't the issue it seems) - but since
have fixed the IE issue, but now it leaves me wondering about SP3 and
why it isn't working.

You did not mention if you followed the SP3 installation instructions:

There are some popular error situations listed there and what to do
about them.

David:
In addition to the MS article Jose referenced...

Here's a MS article dealing with the possible issue of SP3 not working with
AMD processors just in case this has any application in your case. BTW, when
you post a problem/issue like the one you did it's always a good idea if you
would provide a reasonable amount of background info re the system you're
working with, not merely refer to "my computer".

From our experience this problem seems to affect only OEM machines,
particularly HP ones, but it could involve other AMD-based systems as well.
In addition to the symptoms noted in the article re the Stop error messages
I've seen references to continuous reboots occurring.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you attempted to install SP3?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
