sp3 update problems

Windows XP automatically installed sp3 for me. I restarted the computer, and
it wouldn't reload again. I can only load using debugging mode. After about
ten minutes everything freezes and I have to start all over again. No safe
mode. No system restore. Can anyone help please?

That's what you get for trusting Microsoft. Uninstall SP3 and then do a
Google search on how to install SP3 properly.

Continual reboots or can only boot into Safe Mode after installing WinXP
SP3?

See
http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jes...ed-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx
[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
(WinXP SP3)."]

Possible workaround: Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to
INTELPMM.OLD.

Also if I where to install SP3 I would choose to download the
file and not use Automatic Updates. See below on where to
obtain the SP3 download file.

Your PC must be at least SP1 or SP2 level as SP3 will not
install on XP Gold.

I would also create an "Image Backup" of my drive prior
to installing SP3 just in case you do have problems.
Don't have any Image Backup software:
Try "True Image" (has a 15 day trial version available)
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

If you use Zone Alarm Firewall (Free or Paid) then update to
the most recent version.

Internet Explorer: (From Shenan Stanley MS MVP)
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center

avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows

JS, that forum was intended for use during WinXP SP3 beta. MS no longer
monitors that forum. Your best bet now for WinXP SP3 issues is this

Just an update. I uninstalled sp3, tried reinstalling from the update site,
and the same thing happened again. So, I uninstalled it again, am back to SP2
and plan to stay here for a while and do windows updates manually.

I will probably try to reinstall sp3 before the April 4, 2009 free support
deadline, or maybe much sooner. I just don't have the time to play around
with the installation for now.

Thank you to those who chipped in. It helped now, and I'm sure it will help
when I decide to reinstall sp3 again.

I am having a similar problem. I have an HP Pavilion with an AMD processor,
and I have been trying to avoid updating to SP3, but this evening it
automatically downloaded SP3 and on restart my computer did not load drivers
and froze at the desktop. I was trying to avoid SP3 because the last time I
allowed SP3 to load, the computer locked up and I had to hire an expert to
get it to work again at $250. Unfortunately, I did not have system restore
on. I was able to restore my privious setting this evening. - I find this
problem disgusting. I have used Windows since Win 3.1 and never had a
problem with updates. Is Microsoft intentionally screwing with our computers
to force us to use their second rate OS Vista?????
