....but, now my "internet connection" icon in system tray has vanished,
(which apparantly was there because Upnp was on in my router). My LAN icon
is still there, ..anyone know how to get my "internet connection" icon back
again ?

(....no, ....I don't want to get it back by uninstalling SP3 !! )

Hello Richard,

I turned off AVG and Spybot resident before installing SP3 on two machines,
and the SP3 installation went without a hitch.

I DID have problems, though, on one PC after I downloaded and installed AVG
8 free edition two days after installing SP3. After I installed AVG 8 on one
machine and rebooted, I lost connectivity to my wireless adapter.

I mucked around for 5 hours and eventually uninstalled AVG 8, uninstalled
SP3, and did a System Restore back to before both SP3 and AVG 8 were
installed.

Once I did this, I deleted and reinstalled my Netgear adapter to make sure
that I had connectivity -- I did.

Then I re-installed AVG 7.5 and made sure I had connectivity -- and I did.

Finally, I reinstalled SP3 and made sure I had connectivity, which I did.

I'm not about to try AVG 8.0 anytime soon with SP3.

If AVG will not be issuing updates after May 31, then I will probably go to
AVAST.

I have nearly two dozen virtual machines ranging from Win98SE to Vista
Ultimate x64 in which I have been using AVG 7.5. Come the end of the month
I will have a long job switching over to Avast, but I tried to install AVG
8.1 on one of them and that experience was enough for me.

I've found AVG 8.0 to be unproblematic on every PC I've installed it into,
....once it's gone in that is !
....now that I've said that, I'll get a stubborn one !!!
I found out the hard way, a couple of times, that it would not install on
top of 7.5, and that one has to uninstall 7.5 first. I think I read
somewhere on the AVG site, and on 8.0 nag screens, to completely uninstall
7.5 before stuffing 8.0 in there, so serves me right for trying !

After Ghosting my XP drive out to 3rd internal 80gb IDE hd, (that I'd
forgotten was in there / my main PC, ...after fitting two SATA hd's a while
ago, and rediscovering that IDE drive after checking right through bios
settings ! ), I decided that I must have SP3, just for the sake of it !!!
(blush) ! (Conroe MB/Presler D935/1gb).

SP3 wouldn't go in until I switched off AVG 8.0 real time scanner, switched
off real time scanning in Windows Defender, and quit Spybot S&D real time
scanner / Teatimer module and others. I think it was just Defender that
needed to be switched off but, I thought I'd better switch off all the code
sniffers.
First thing I found after SP3 had gone in was that MSN Messenger had
reappeared, so had to get rid of its' "Run" key in registry, or did I run
Doug Knox's vbs script to do that ? ...can't remember now :)

I tried Avast, a very long time ago, (perhaps I just couldn't find it) but,
there seemed to be no way to switch off its' real-time scanner during a
Windows session, and it was unhappy co-existing with other anti-malware
real-time scanners.

AVG full internet security suite is happy in an old Packard Bell iXtreme
6052, (with a "new" SL6GT 2.5ghz cpu and extra 256mb ddr266 in it, and a new
Zotac 6200A AGP card in it). ...s'pose I ought to SP3 that before it goes
back !

SP3 and AVG 8.0 free are fine in old Compaq nx9005, and Toshiba Satellite
A60, laptops, that both have had 512mb pc2700 put into their free empty
slot/s, same is fine in my AliveN56G/2.4ghz/1gb box and my "house" PC
Asrock 760GXK8MC.RS/2.2ghz/1gb ...
.....mmmm....
....anyhoooooooo, ....what was SP3 for beyond the "fun" of installing it, and
the "thrill" of that NEVER-ENDING blue progress bar ! ??

AVG 8.0 caused my system to hang during logon. An extra Alt-Ctrl-Delete
would then make the logon continue. My system was a fully patched XP SP2
(just installed SP3 :)).

The 8.0 installer uninstalls 7.5, but apparently doesn't do it right. Like you, I
had to manually uninstall 7.5 before I could install 8.0.

I therefore dumped AVG 8.0. Uninstalling AVG 8.0 took a few tries because
of the uninstall would hang. I am now running Avast.

I am running AVG AntiSpyware 7.5 and Avast 4.8 with no problems. Avast
4.8 allows you to stop the On-Access scanner (I actually had to do this to
install XP SP3).

Hi Colin (and others),

I realize that in my earlier post I had associated my problems with the
installation of AVG 8. Actually it was more tangentially associated with AVG
8.

My problems really began upon re-booting after I first uninstalled AVG
7.5 --
in preparation for the installation of AVG 8.

It was then that I lost connectivity and I had to go through all the steps
in my earlier post -- including the re-installation of AVG 7.5 -- to
re-establish my wireless connectivity.
