SP3 and Windows Defender

I updated from XP SP2 to SP3 about a week ago. I also run IE7 and AVG 8.0
and Windows Defender.

Not sure whether this is coincidence but Defender is now doing a daily quick
scan shortly after PC startup. This is not scheduled by me - the schedule
setting is for a once a week quick scan on a Friday evening. PC is also
running slower than before SP£ update. Does SP3 override Defender in some
way?

Can't answer any of your questions but I have one of my own about your
setup: why are you running AVG 8.0 and Windows Defender?

I don't think you need both. I disabled Defender when I loaded AVG
8.0. Doing the same might speed things up for you. Just a guess.

Nonny, I use AVG, CounterSpy (out of same stable as Defender) and Spyware
Doctor. In the past I have found that all three find problems that the
others have not picked up on.

Thanks but can we get back to my thread - why is Defender generating a quick
scan every day when the setting is for one a week only?

Running several antispyware programs on a computer is OK. The user should
run only one antivirus program.

....just to throw in my "tuppence worth," I bought a "3 license pack AVG 8.0
Internet Security, a few days ago, and, (having left Spybot S&D 1.5.2
running in my main PC), ...then after an AVG 8.0 a/v hd sweep - AVG reported
"30 items {they were actually registry keys} - warning" but, no "healing."
After a quick hunt with Google I spotted people talking about one of Spybot
S&D's anti-malware technique's is to drop about 30 keys into the Windows
registry to "trick" those particular 30 odd types of malware ! ...so with
great regret, (seeing as S&D is free ...and I donated £15 to them a couple
of months ago!), I removed Spybot S&D

I quite like AVG 8.0 but, I'm not keen on the advice they've given out to
people recently, and in particular to one customer who emailed them about
this "anomaly" when running AVG 8.0 with Spybot S&D), along the lines of,
"...we suggest you drop your "multi-layered" approach to internet security
in preference of running just one internet security suite...).

Were AVG and Defender both disabled before you installed SP3? Did you
install SP3 via Windows Update or manually?

I take the point - thanks.

SP3 installed manually. Have now re-installed Defender and reverted from
AVG Antispyware 8.0 back to 7.5. Defender has stopped its unschedule quick
scans and PC speed back to normal.

I have AVG (anti-virus) 8.0 and Defender installed in WinXP SP2 and have not
seen the behavior you describe; therefore it's possible that having either
of these applications running in the background when you installed WinXP SP3
caused this behavior.

Should you encounter further problems, see if uninstalling and then
reinstalling SP3 in the environment described above resolves the problems.

PS: AVG Anti-Virus v7.5 will no longer be supported after 31 May 2008 (i.e.,
no more definition or program updates).
