You can disable IE, if you so choose - set the proxy server address in the
advanced tab of IE to be 0.0.0.1. And this doesn't affect Automatic update
downloading, either!
You will need IE if you want to visit windowsupdate.com, though some
browsers (I know Opera supports this) have plugins that you can download so
you can make the browser emulate (act like) IE.
In theory, you can go to start -control panel -add remove programs -add
remove windows components and remove IE, but it doesn't get rid of it
completely.
I use firefox, and I love it - it's the only browser we use at home.
