sp2 upgrade - OE now gone...

I

ilona

I've just upgraded my XP w/the sp2 patch and no longer
can find my Outlook Express program on my computer.

I *had* both Outlook and OE on my computer -- using
Outlook for my personal InsightBB emails, while using OE
for my business website emails that I would download into
it.

After the upgrade, my desktop no longer had the OE
shortcut icon on it. The program file for OE seems to
contain .exe and .dll files for migrating my address
book, but not the program itself.

One thing that obviously is related to this is the pop-up
I received after the upgrade from my InsightBB account:
it notified me that it could not process any of my
business emails. Duh! It wasn't set up for that in the
1st place...those emails go to by MIA OE account.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Ilona

Have you looked in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express (assuming "C:" is
the drive where XP is installed)?

See if Msimn.exe is there, double click on it, if it's not there, see
if Setup50.exe is there and double click on it.

You may have to set Windows Explorer to "show hidden files and
folders", in Windows Explorer click on Tools/Folder Options and select
the View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders", uncheck "Hide
extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system
files".

Thx, XS11E -- Appreciate the help.

No, Msimn.exe isn't there. Setup50.exe is -- *however*
double-clicking on it results in nothing happening. It's
like the icon is there, but it's missing the meat behind
it.

I checked all of the hidden files, and still no luck.(
For some reason, it just appears that the sp2 patch
totally deleted my entire OE program

Any ideas why it would have done that? Should I do a
system restore? If so, what could I do to ensure that
when I reapply the sp2 patch it doesn't wipe out my OE
again?

TIA,

Ilona

It should have started the OE install but apparently the needed stuff
is missing????

Try this first, go to Windows Update and see if it wants to install OE,
if so, let it! If not, go to "Add/Remove Programs" in control panel,
select "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left side. Then scroll
down until you see Outlook Express, if it's checked, uncheck it, click
Next and exit the program, reboot, repeat and check it. It should ask
for your Windows XP CD and install OE..... I hope!

If not, you'll need to do a repair install.

As to why OE is gone, I can't even guess?

I don't know either. But drring the peirod when I saw the desktop after
installing SP2, I couldn't launch any app except ZA and AVG anti-virus,
which were launched by startup. I tried IE and couldn't get that to run.
Explorer did run, though. I went into the OE folder and tried to double
click on MSIMN.exe . That didn't work either.

That drive (The one I unsuccessfully installed SP2 on) won't boot
anymore.I'm now using a different, per-SP2, drive to function.
