I have an acer aspire 1300 notebook which i upgraded to sp2. Since then when
I do things like ripping music, scanning for viruses etc. the computer just
turns off, when it overheats. Anyone got any ideas how to stop it shutting
down?

Don't allow it to overheat - this is a mechanical safety to keep the system
from becoming permanently damaged. Keep the vents clear, make sure all fans
are operating properly and are free of dust and debris - visit a tech if
they are not.

In addition to Rick's reply (getting the heat under control should be your
first priority), have you seen those "cool pads" that they have for
laptops? These are about the size of a notepad and fit under the body of
the laptop. They contain a few fans and are designed to draw heat away from
the laptop. Price is about $30 USD in my area.

Quite possible that the laptop drivers aren't compatible with Windows XP
SP2. Contact Acer for assistance.
