SP2 update caused ongoing issues

Sorry...this is long and detailed. I hope someone will have the patience to
read it and the experience to assist me. THANKS!

I resisted a long time but finally had to update my system to SP2. There was
a conflict with Norton System Works that caused no end of grief. I worked
with MS on the phone and they helped me resolve the first round of problems.
I had trouble removing System Works. Eventually I found Symantec's
downloadable file that lets you manually uninstall. I have not reinstalled
System Works because my software is in storage due to a home sale & move. I
have NAV 2005 which I installed after removing System Works so I'm protected
against viruses.

Ever since this update I'm having an ongoing problem with my system. My best
guess is it's a resource leak because it seems to only happen in the late
afternoon. It happens DAILY. Depending on what I'm doing the problems look
slightly different. Often it means I can't get email or webpages anymore on
my DSL connection. Most importantly once I recognize the problem has started
I try a ctrl-alt-del to see what's going on with resources. But I can no
longer access the task manager. When I try to do so I get an error message
that the application failed to initialize properly, 0xc0000017. Sometimes it
also says error: not enough quota is available to process this command. I've
also had Indesing running low on disk space needs space for temp data on C.
BTW my C drive is 40 Gigs with half of that free. I also have 10 Gigs free
on another drive. Some form of this issue happens no matter what the
application I'm in, every afternoon. So I can't end the task. Usually I
can't do anything but turn off the computer manually, although sometimes I
can use the start menu exit button. Either way I get errors of at least one
and often more programs that cannot close including: explorer, ccCommon,
ccApp, XPcom Event receiver & more. Then when the system finally DOES shuts
down I get a blue screen message saying critical error: problem detected
caused by rdbss.sys. Driver unloaded without cancelling pending operation..
Then I must manually shut off my computer and restart.

I was trying to get help from the MS tech on the same ticket number I
started on. He wanted me to find and delete IEXCVES.EXE. However I didn't
have that file on my system. He also thought I had either virus or spyware.
I've run 3 different spyware utilities and nothing was found and I've run a
complete NAV scan with nothing either.
I've looked up the error messages in the KB. One just says to increase
paging file. I have 688 mgs of ram. I have page file set to 1920 for min &
max The search on the blue screen message "problem detected caused by
rdbss.sys" says...

Terminal Services Client Blue Screen Bug Fix Do your Windows XP Home
Edition, XP Professional Edition, and Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services
clients crash with a stop code of 0x7F from win32k.sys? Microsoft attributes
this system crash to a stack overflow that occurs when the OS closes a large
number of nested windows. Given this description, I expect the Terminal
Services client crash occurs when a user opens a large number of windows,
either before or during a Terminal Services session. If this bug is causing
the problem, after the client reboots and establishes another Terminal
Services session, it crashes with the same stop code. Microsoft has released
a patch that solves the stack overflow problem. The patch contains updated
versions of 14 files with release dates of February 14 through March 4. You
can get this update only from Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS); cite
Microsoft article "Windows Stops Responding with 'Stop Error 0x7F' Error
Message" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=814789) as the reference.

Any insights/help greatly appreciated.

There have been many complaints recently since the latest NAV has come out.
Try this and see if it helps -
Pull the plug on your i'net connection
COMPLETELY remove all traces of Norton

If that settles things down, use another AV.

Thanks for your response John. Will simply uninstalling NAV do that or will
I need to fuss around in the registry? I forgot to mention that I did
unninstall and reinstall NAV per MS request and that didn't help.

If it was me, I'd clean out the Registry as well, but then I'm pretty used
to manipulating it.
In there, you have Run, Run once, plus many other keys which may have an
effect.
