crash caused by SP2 ?

I am continually getting a crash which initially seems to be caused be
service pack2
However-- when uninstalled the error was in SP1 and my PC refused to start!
Have restored system using restore disc but problem is still there
the sys32 and internet explorer continually have problems and need to
closedown
and I regularly get the message " your system has recovered from a serious
error" and A dmp. file is created
can any one help

If you've used your restore disk and are still getting the error, my first
thought would be a hardware problem.

Changed any hardware on that system lately? Sure that all the cooling is
working properly, computer is well ventilated, etc?

Hello Mike,

At this time, which XP service pack is on this system? ( 1, 2, or none? ) The "recovered from a serious error" problem was first fixed back in March 2002 by an update. Do the tweaks below. But also post back with some more info. Is this an HP or Compaq pc? Is this an OEM system?
You have a system restore CD ---- is it Win XP gold? (eg, pre-SP1 ? )


Go into your Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | System icon |
System properties | "Advanced" TAB | in the "Startup and Recovery"
section....click the "settings" button. "Un-check" the "automatically
restart" line.
And in the "Write debugging information" select "NONE". (<--- this last bit is to get around the fault which generates serious error. And unfortunately, will likely not write events to the event log.)

Apply & logoff & reboot system.

Unless there's a very compelling reason, your XP needs at be at service pack 2 + later updates.

In addition to Robert's suggestions, Run a ram memory tester like MEMTEST86.

Insure your memory checks out ok.

More on program crashes:
See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc<enter>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings that match the time the event occurred.
Double click---the information "may" give a clue.

Well it's a problem with your USB ADSL modem. Can you see if updated drivers
are available for it?
