SP2 unusable on my XP pro

After installing SP2 using the automatics update service,
I now notices a strange event.

After powering up, if I wait for abount 1-2 minutes, the
welcome screen locks up and only the mouse moves. I cannot
CTRL-ALT-DEL or power off.
If I manage to log on ( administrator) before the above
period, there is a 50-50 chance that using the start button
to select something will lock the system.

Using the "stsrem restore" to go back to before SP2 fixes
all these problems.
I use zomealarm and avasti virus checker ( which work OK
SP1 )
I also use Mozilla firefox and thunderbird instead of
exploder and outlook express

Has anyone else seen problems like this.

Many are reporting similar. However, there are some things to do to
help mitigate problems. Before installing SP2, run Disk Cleanup,
*complete* virus scan and adware scans, defrag so that there is
contiguous space for the install, check your vendor(s) for last-minute
SP2 driver updates, you might do sfc /scannow to make sure that SP1
files are not corrupted for backup, clean out all restore points and
then set a new one prior to the install, turn off *all* running apps and
non-system processes in Task Manager which means disconnect network
first since there will be no firewall or anti-virus running during
install (remember to turn these on after the install before again
connecting).

Check the Windows Update site for the references to MS own
recommendations also.
