Last night I told my computer to install updates that had been downloaded by
windows update.

Now I have the following two messages alternating in the middle of the screen:

1: "Do not turn off or unplug your computer, it will turn off automatically"
2: "Installing update 1 of 2"

What is going on and what should I do?

It's OK to power off and restart the offending PC. Check out Microsoft
Article KB873374. You need to download the small file in that article and run
it, then manually push through any updates available at the update URL, and
then boot a couple of times.

I know it sounds silly and avoidable but Microsoft allowed a fully automatic
update to include an update which required your interaction to agree to EULA
terms. Since it was automatic naturally you weren't there to respond
favorably and that update was hosed leaving you in a form of limbo. My guess
is that this caused some expense for Microsoft in their phone support, I
think they will fix it (the conflict of having automatic unattended updates
requiring interaction) long term. Dean
