SP2 - something odd after applying SP2???

I installed XP SP2 on my HP laptop. The install went fine except I was tight on
space so afterwards I decided to compress the drive (I was already using NTFS
format).

This seemed to be going fine until suddenly I was informed that a whole load of
system files were "not the originals.....so to speak" and it offered me the
choice of either ignoring the "error", trying again or inserting the
installation CD to replace these files.

Surely this must be a defect in SP2????

More likely something went wrong during compression.
Can you uncompress?

Compressing everything is usually not a good idea since it will take
time to uncompress data before it can be used.
The performance hit can be significant when you take into account all
the Windows XP files being uncompressed then compressed each and every
time they are accessed.

If you compress every file your computer won't boot. Any file writing causes XP to attempt to replace the file.

Thanks for your reply.

The machine is running flawlessly - I simply chose the "Ignore" option guessing
that somehow, wherever windows keeps this information, it had not picked up on
the fact that SP2 had replace SP1 system files.

There was nothing in the event log after the compression.

I need to keep it compressed as I am too low on disk space.
