WinXP won't boot after install SP2

Working on eMachine (i know...) W2925 (Cele-2.66Ghz/256Mb mem/120Gb hd). Only
have the restore DVD for WinXP w/SP1. Unit will peform full restore and run
with SP1 just fine. Every time I try to install SP2 (download, full install)
unit hangs on mandatory reboot at the WinXP screen with the blue travelling
bar. Bar hangs at about half way point, drive runs for about a second
afterwards, then nothing (let it sit for a couple of hours several times).
Have rebuilt the unit well over a dozen times now, with approx same results,
the moving bar stops at different point if I do something different. Have
tried upgrading device drivers from eMachines, and emachine-updaters before
loading SP2. Have uninstalled most of the bulk loaded programs before loading
SP2. Check the Control Panel/System/Device Manager before start load of SP2,
all devices look good. If try to boot to Safe, boot always stops at loading
"Mup.sys". All I can find about that file says to try newer drivers, I have
tried that. All other boot modes come to halt on WinXP screen after load of
SP2. Have tried two different SP2 files from different sources. Have removed
modem, replaced Dvd drive, replaced power supply, replaced memory module,
even tried a different monitor. Still same results. Got any ideas that might
allow me to boot after loading SP2. Really don't want to give this unit back
to the owner and have to tell them NOT to connect to the internet due to
security issues and possible download/install of SP2...

What about trying to install with a generic OEM XP CD that has SP2 and use
the product key on the sticker attached to the computer?
