SP2 slowdown

After biting the bullet and installing SP2 when I log on the system
displays my main screen but the icns for the various programs show up as
a generic white square and then change to the normal icons one or two at
a time. Prior to SP2 they would all show up normally when thw screen
appeared. Is this an SP2 setting problem or something to live with?
