SP2 Read-Only problems

I've recently installed the Service Pack 2 update and now
all my folders and files are set to read-only. I'm the
only user on this machine and I've doubled checked to
make sure I'm listed as the Computer Administrator.

If I got to a folder or file... let's use a folder for
this example and inside this folder is a program I'd like
to run, however in order for the program to work properly
it needs to modify and add to files that in that folder.
With them set to read-only, this is impossible.

So I go and right click the folder->properties uncheck
read-only->click apply then apply to all subfolders and
files. Go to run the program.... error.. I check the
folder again, still set to read-only.... So I do the
exact same thing again, and then check it afterwards...
still read-only. I do it again but instead of all
subfolders and files I choose just that folder... Hazzah
I think .... I recheck it.. still read only..

So then I redo it again, right click folder->properties
uncheck read-only, apply to all subfolders and files, but
I don't click Ok. I go into the folder and run the
program, haha! success the program works now... until I
click Ok on that properties screen...it all goes back to
read-only...

Does anyone know why this is happening, and how one would
go about obliterating this most annoying 'feature'?

Any help would be most appriciated as this has basically
incapacitated my machine.

That is "by design". Have you checked the individual files or just the
folder attributes?

You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326549

"Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a
folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories,
and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder
with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer. The Read-only and
System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the
folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view
customized by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts,
Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the
Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box. As a result, Windows
Explorer does not allow you to view or change the Read-only or System
attributes of folders."

Ahh, thanks... was quite odd I thought. I guess it could
have been there all along and only noticed it because the
program was trying to write to a folder that was read-
only and couldn't.

So basically... according to that article.. I just need
to attrib the lot of 'em and cross my fingers.

Thanks for the assistance
