sp2 problem....

hi, trying to install sp2 on my father's computer. The computer wants to
install it, but everytime I try to(twice now) I only get the desktop, no
icons or taskbar, nothing. From other forums' i've read, this isnt a unique
problem, its widespread. So i go into safe mode and unistall. How can I get
sp2 to work right? Maybe installing in safe mode??? I'm out of ideas
thanks

Did you do all the necessary preparation, such as:

1. Insure that the computer is 100% spyware and virus-free?
2. Do all necessary cleanup maintenance?
3. If an OEM machine (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.) go to the OEM's website and
download/apply all necessary patches prior to installing SP2?
4. Make sure that all peripherals were disconnected before instalilng
SP2?
